Greater Than County Youth Collective is a collective impact project working to improve the lives of youth: now, and in the future. Using a collaborative, youth-led model, Greater Than works closely with agencies in Prince Edward County (including Prince Edward Learning Centre) to increase youth engagement in the community and improve local high school graduation rates.

To showcase the work it does, Greater Than partnered with local youth experts and adult allies to create youth-friendly, barrier-free website, using the “hackathon” model.

With guidance from local professional Brock Warner, youth developed their own plan to design and build the website.

Using a “hackathon” approach, youth were able to build a website in under 9 hours.

Participants broke into three working groups to collaborate on the tasks of writing content, building pages, and marketing. Youth devoted a day of their March Break to get it up and ready.

Throughout the process, young people were supported with guidance on web development and inspired to feel confident in new skills they were learning. This process was a huge success! Bringing youth to the table with adult allies allowed them to create — in just one day — a user-friendly, accessible website that highlights the broader work Greater Than does for the community!
