We started PEC Fresh exactly two years ago. Coordinator Robyn Cakebread and Fulfillment Manager Scott Whitelock have been here since day one, caring for customers and volunteers.
We bring in about $1,500 worth of produce on Wednesdays, and sell it at wholesale prices, online from 12 to 3pm, and in person from 4 to 6pm. We’ve expanded to a second location in Sophiasburg, every second Saturday at the County Food Hub.
PEC Fresh is for everyone. It is an idea that started from the classroom at the Learning Centre: students spent time researching food issues in PEC, visiting farms and other Good Food markets, and decided to start a market here based on their own needs and experiences. Today:
- About 100 unique customers are served each month
- Over 15 volunteers support markets at our two locations
- Market sales increased 46% in our second year
Another great outcome is the market’s ability to serve as a training site. People with limited work experience get training and experience working on cash, filling orders, using spreadsheets, customer service, and inventory tracking.
I’ve been telling people ever since my first visit how amazing your healthy food program is. The salad greens are particularly fabulous, including the stunning arugula and cilantro that I’ve picked up on occasion.
I’ve been telling all manner of people what high quality your produce is and what amazing prices. It’s a great service for people with limited means to help eat better. I have found the volunteers really friendly and helpful whenever I’ve been able to go with my friend. Your delivery service is fabulous for seniors who can’t get out.
Thank you so much for sending out the weekly order, which I go over with my friend and then we combine into one order to make it easier, or we go down on Wednesday on the tables. This is a fabulous public service for local people!” — PEC Fresh Market Customer
PEC Fresh Good Food Market was established in October of 2020 as one of 15 pilot “Market Greens” programs across Canada funded through Community Food Centres Canada. The program offers food prescriptions (Greens Rx) to people who struggle to afford fresh produce and have dietary illness often linked to lack of access to healthy foods. Up to one in five PEC residents face food insecurity, according to the 2022 Vital Signs report recently released by the County Foundation.
