Help Filing Your Taxes

Need help with your taxes? We’ve got your back!

Need to file multiple returns? We can help with that too!

Our volunteer tax clinics are open to the community. The service is free, friendly and confidential. You can access our free tax clinics if you:

  • are a resident of Prince Edward County
  • have modest annual income
  • are not self-employed

You can choose to file in person or virtually. Our volunteers are welcoming and the service is fast and easy. (We promise!)

PELC tax clinics are part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, funded by the Canada Revenue Agency and United Way Hastings & Prince Edward. All of our volunteers are vetted by the CRA and complete Vulnerable Sector Checks with the OPP. Our staff and volunteers can also help identify benefits and programs you may be eligible for.

Contact us today! You will get an intake call to discuss your eligibility and set up an appointment.

Free tax filing services for people age 60 and over are also available through Community Care for Seniors.

Learn how else we can support your financial empowerment. Our staff may be able to:

  • help you apply for programs and benefits to save you money
  • coach you through filing your own tax return using Wealthsimple Tax
  • reduce your energy bill
  • help deal with bills that are past due
  • help you set a budget

Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer experience that makes a big difference in people’s lives? Consider helping people file simple tax returns through our free tax clinics!

Many people find taxes intimidating. When people get behind on filing, they may miss out on benefits for which they’re eligible. Helping people file their taxes can restore these benefits, put money in their pockets and alleviate financial stress.

Our free tax clinics are part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program funded by the Canada Revenue Agency and United Way Hastings & Prince Edward:

  • no formal background in accounting is required
  • all training is provided
  • volunteers have access to a hotline to resolve any questions with a CRA tax specialist

PELC also provides volunteers with training in benefits screening, allowing staff to help clients access all the programs and benefits for which they may qualify.

As a volunteer:

  • you can assist clients in person or virtually from home
  • you will receive a PELC email address to use
  • you do not have to share your personal phone or email
  • you must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the OPP

Financial literacy and financial empowerment are critical to our work at PELC. Volunteers are the backbone of this important program. The tax clinics are also an opportunity for our staff to provide more immediate help where appropriate, such as life stabilization supports, or help dealing with bills that are past due.

If you would like to explore this rewarding opportunity, please get in touch:

PELC approaches tax assistance as financial empowerment – connecting people with benefits they often wouldn’t even know they qualify for. I’m filing people’s taxes, but I feel like part of a larger picture.”
